Hunt Dates
The dates for full-camp rifle elk hunts are the least flexible since we pack into camp on October 14th and pack out on October 20th. The dates for 4x4 elk rifle hunts, antelope and deer hunts, and elk bow hunts are more flexible:
Elk bow hunting:  whole month of September
Elk 4x4 rifle hunting:  last half of October
Deer hunting:  whole month of September
Antelope hunting:  middle of September though end of October (depending on license type and region)

Changes: Elk Rifle Hunting (only) for 2008

We're making some changes to our Elk Rifle Hunts this year, after having carefully considered the pro's and con's of such changes. We will still do the Archery Elk Hunts in the same Huston Park Wilderness area where we've gone previously, but the Elk Rifle Hunts will change: instead of hunting in the Huston Park Wilderness, we will set up camp at our ranch (the tents will have wood floors, carpet and some furniture). From the the camp on the ranch, we can do Elk Rifle Hunts in several different areas nearby. This also will allow us to increase the amount of time available for Elk Rifle Hunts from 1 week to 3 weeks.
The three options for Elk Rifle Hunts are:
          A. Arrive: 14 October (afternoon). Hunt: 15-19 October. Leave: 20 October (morning).
          B. Arrive: 20 October (afternoon). Hunt: 21-25 October. Leave: 26 October (morning).
          C. Arrive: 26 October (afternoon). Hunt: 27-31 October. Leave: 1 November (morning).
We're making these changes in response to changes in the weather these past few years -- the weather has been unusually bad at camp for the past three years. The wilderness camp is located at the top of the mountain, so if it snows much, the elk go off the mountain. This makes hunting difficult since we have to ride the horses for two or three hours from camp, one way, to get to where the majority of the elk are. The elk do sometimes return to the top of the mountain after getting pressure from many hunters below, but this can take three to five days -- waiting this long means your hunting trip could be over before the elk return. There are occasionally some elk near camp, but they don't stay for long -- they are usually just passing through on their way to lower ground.
If we have our camp at the ranch, however, we have several different alternatives to choose from: we can go do day hunts on Old Baldy, Pennock Mountain, in Cedar Pass, or around the Belt Road. Depending on the weather, we can choose higher or lower elevations from among these options which will allow us to drastically improve your chances of getting an elk. If we have very good reason to believe there will be no snow in the wilderness area, it is still possible we may be able to set up camp there for one or two of the weeks between October 14 and November 1. We strongly believe we will increase everyone's chances of getting elk (and having a fun time hunting -- rather than waiting out storms!) by having the flexibility to choose week-by-week where we hunt based on the weather conditions.
Hunters still need to bring all the same personal gear including a sleeping bag. Tents, wood stove (and wood), cots, pads, horses and three meals a day will still be provided as usual. The only thing that's changed from last year is the location of the tents. We hope you understand our reasoning for deciding to change the camp location -- we truly think this will improve the hunt for everyone. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us anytime -- we're here to help! Hope everyone had a great 2007 hunting season! -- Tony & Trisha

Booking a Hunt and Availability of Hunt Dates

If you're thinking of hunting with us, please give us a call, and if you're putting in for a license, please let us know and we will try to accommodate your requested hunt dates. Hunt dates are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you have notified us early that you intended to put in for a license, you will be first in line for hunt dates. To book a hunt, we require a 50% deposit and a signed contract. We will only formally book a hunt after you have been successful in the license draw. The balance is due when you arrive for your hunt.
When you book after the license draw, remember that we give date preferences to hunters who have either booked first or who have notified us prior to the license draw that they intended to put in for a license. Please book as early as possible to ensure you get the hunt dates you want, and let us know if you're planning to put in for a license. Due to the number of repeat clients and the finite number of guides, our openings are limited. Season dates are subject to change by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Refund Policy

We cannot offer refunds (except under extreme circumstances) if you're unable to make your scheduled hunt. Our refund policy is in accordance with license refunds offered by the Game and Fish. You can mail deposits to us at: Battle Pass Outfitting, P.O. Box 397, Saratoga, WY 82331. Personal checks are accepted, but we cannot accept credit cards.

Getting to the Ranch

The ranch is located a little over two hours from Cheyenne, and Cheyenne is about two hours from Denver. Some hunters fly into Denver or Cheyenne, and some fly into Laramie, which is even closer -- about one and a half hours from the ranch. Some hunters drive too -- let us know where you're coming in from and we can tell you the best route and might even be able to pick you up. Confused? Check out our map.

Preference Points

Wyoming nonresident hunters can consider participating in the optional "Preference Points" system. The following information will hopefully help you deicide whether you should apply for a preference point in addition to your license.
In recent years, "preference points" have become available for nonresidents who apply for elk, deer and antelope licenses. The preference points system was implemented in 2006 following numerous requests from hunters to develop a system that would reward perseverance in applying for hard-to-draw areas.
The preference point system is optional. Nonresidents who apply for a license with the preference point purchase option will be awarded a point if unsuccessful for drawing a license on their first choice. Hunters who apply for a license and preference point purchase and are successful in drawing a license on their second or third choice will still be awarded a point. This gives hunters the option of applying for a hard-to-draw area on their first choice, listing an easy-to-draw area on their second and still build preference points for future years.
Cost of the preference point is $50 for elk, $40 for deer, $30 for antelope and $10 for each species for youth under 18. Hunters who wish to apply for a preference point only without the possibility of drawing a license will need to wait until July 1, at which time preference point purchase only applications will be available in hard copy and on the Game and Fish website.
The Game and Fish predicts that there will be a statistical advantage to hunters who build up points since 75% of licenses will be issued to hunters with the highest point totals. The remaining 25% will be issued in a random drawing that will at least give all applicants a chance of drawing a license regardless of the preference point totals.
The elk, deer and antelope license preference point system is only for nonresident licenses. Both residents and nonresidents have had a similar system in place for moose and bighorn sheep for a number of years. Hunters with questions can call the Game and Fish at 307-777-4600 or
click here to visit the specific page on the Game & Fish website where you can download the entire "2007 Nonresident Hunting Information and Applications Booklet" in PDF format. Preference points are explained in detail on p.6-7 of the booklet. (It's a large file to download, so if you're using a dial-up connection, you might just want to call and have them send you one in the mail!)
